Germany’s Ruhr region is far less widely associated with the aerospace industry than major hubs such as Hamburg, Munich or Bremen. That makes Doncasters’ investment in its Bochum facility all the more notable: the company is investing $52 million to expand production capacity, including for the aerospace business of the specialist in high-performance precision-cast components. The investment forms part of a three-year strategic program.
The international group specializes in complex metallic components for highly demanding applications. Its Bochum site is part of Doncasters’ European manufacturing network and produces precision-cast components for aerospace and turbomachinery applications. The facility holds approvals from companies including GE, Rolls-Royce, Safran and MTU.
Doncasters Expands Aerospace Manufacturing in Bochum
The initiative is aimed at expanding production capacity, enhancing manufacturing capabilities and strengthening supply-chain resilience for aerospace customers, as the company announced in late 2025. Among other areas, the Bochum facility is set to expand its capabilities in vacuum-cast turbine blades and vanes as well as superalloys for aircraft engines.
Precision Casting for Turbine Blades and Aircraft Engines
Components such as turbine blades and vanes are among the most demanding series-produced parts in an aircraft engine. Particularly in the hot section, components are exposed to extreme temperatures and high mechanical loads. Materials and manufacturing processes therefore have to provide exceptional strength, durability and dimensional accuracy.
Specialized suppliers such as Doncasters consequently play a key role in the aerospace supply chain.
$52 Million Program to Create Additional Aerospace Production Capacity
Doncasters’ new investment program is intended to strengthen this position at a time of growing demand for new aircraft.
Part of the initiative is the construction of a new production building, according to Indy Rattu, President Europe at Doncasters. He said the expansion forms part of a broader initiative that “will gather further momentum throughout 2027 and 2028 and position Bochum firmly at the forefront of Doncasters’ global capabilities.”
New DS Furnaces for Directionally Solidified Turbine Blades
The first stage of the expansion was scheduled to begin with the installation of new furnaces from December 2025. These include a DS furnace for directional solidification.
In this process, the molten metal is cooled under precisely controlled conditions so that the crystal structure grows preferentially in a defined direction. This is particularly important for highly loaded turbine blades because it can improve their mechanical properties at elevated temperatures.
New Production Building and Center of Excellence for Casting Cores
The new 3,000-square-meter production building is also expected to accommodate existing equipment transferred from the main Bochum facility while creating additional capacity for large-scale casting cores.
Together with additional employees, the expansion is intended to provide the foundation for a center of excellence for casting-core manufacturing at the Bochum site.
Doncasters was already promoting its capabilities heavily at the Farnborough International Airshow in July 2026. Discussions with customers, partners and major industry players are likely to have focused on the company’s expertise in precision-engineered components and advanced manufacturing solutions.
And, almost certainly, on a $52 million investment in the heart of Germany’s Ruhr region.
