Saab receives SEK 2.9 billion order for future fighter system

Saab Future Fighter System Concept

Saab has received an order worth around SEK 2.9 billion from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration FMV for further work on a future fighter system. The contract covers the period from 2026 to 2028 and includes options for 2029 and 2030. The programme is not yet about a production-ready aircraft, but about concepts, technology demonstrators and the further testing of new technologies.

Flying and ground-based demonstrators

Saab will further develop and demonstrate new technologies. The programme includes flying and ground-based demonstrators, advanced studies, and system concepts for both crewed and uncrewed systems.

The work covers system integration and autonomy as well as signature adaptation and propulsion. It also includes digital development methods and future production capabilities. The aim is to build technical expertise, reduce technical risks and preserve options for the future development of Sweden’s air combat capabilities.

“We are very pleased that FMV continues to place its trust in Saab through this new contract. The work is crucial to further develop and demonstrate new technologies that will be central to a future fighter system,” says Lars Tossman, Head of Saab’s Aeronautics business area.

No decision yet on a specific platform

The new order builds on contracts between FMV and Saab from 2024 and 2025. The work remains in the concept and demonstrator phase. The contract therefore does not indicate a specific configuration, a particular aircraft type or a decision on a successor to the Gripen.
