How Much Does a Boeing 737 Weigh? Comparing the 737-800 and 737 MAX

Boeing 737 MAX

The Boeing 737 has been produced in many different variants, so there is no single weight that describes “the 737”.

One of the most common models, the 737-800, has a maximum take-off weight of roughly 79 tonnes. The newer 737-8 MAX can reach 82.64 tonnes.

Boeing 737-800

Boeing lists a maximum take-off weight of 79,010 kg for the 737-800. Different certified weight variants may use lower limits; Boeing’s airport-planning documentation includes examples around 75.2 and 79.016 tonnes.

Actual departure weight depends on passenger load, baggage, cargo, fuel and mission length.

Boeing 737 MAX family

Within the 737 MAX family, maximum take-off weights increase with aircraft size. Boeing currently lists 80.28 tonnes for the 737-7, 82.64 tonnes for the 737-8, 88.31 tonnes for the 737-9 and 89.76 tonnes for the 737-10.

Why empty weight varies

Operating empty weight depends on the individual aircraft configuration. Seating, galleys, lavatories and optional systems all contribute to the final mass.

Weight and take-off performance

Even a 737 certified for a given MTOW cannot necessarily use that full limit on every flight. High temperatures, airport elevation and runway constraints can require a lower take-off mass.

Boeing’s airport-planning charts illustrate how runway requirements change with aircraft weight, temperature and pressure altitude.

In simplified terms, a 737-800 can weigh around 79 tonnes at take-off, while a 737-8 MAX can reach about 82.6 tonnes.
